The methodology of “Learning By Doing” is a novel concept which is a unique methodology being adopted by MSIT. As the Chinese saying goes ‘You hear you forget, you see you remember, you do you understand’, MSIT aims at giving a hands on fulfilling experience which helps the students understand the practical implementation aspects and the concepts associated.
MSIT’s ‘learning by doing’ involves learning in a project centric way. For example, if a student is being offered a course on data structures, he would be asked to work on a project like ‘Mini Google search engine’ which would enable them to understand the various algorithms involved and assimilate the underlying concepts to develop this project. Each course is broken into manageable modules each of which is offered as a project to be worked on. The students understand the concept while working on the project and submit the relevant tasks (deliverables) within the deadline specified by their mentors. Each course is offered by a principal mentor and the student: mentor ratio at MSIT stands out to be 10:1 giving enough scope for the students to interact with their mentor when ever required. Personalized mentoring at MSIT aims at nurturing the students in every way. Course orientations and task orientations by the mentors permit the students to enhance their comprehension and to work on the deliverables. Assessments are made based on the quality of the project delivered.
Students are given individual workstations with laptops and 24x7 internet facilities. Rich digital content with strong audio visual support alongside constant mentoring provides them with the necessary platform. Lectures delivered by eminent people relevant to each course are all made available on a server to enable understanding of the concept. ICT environment makes it possible for students to work on problems at an individual pace. This method also helps the student tap his quest for research by getting into the depths of that particular concept.
MSIT follows a sequential pattern of offering courses in a linear fashion where one course is offered at one time as against the conventional programs which offer courses in a parallel fashion. This sequential pattern adopted at MSIT would enable a student to master one course a time, understand the relevant concepts, give him some scope to explore in depth into core concepts and move on with the next course.
Emphasis is on ‘Learn to learn’. The basic goal is that every person should be taught the skill of “Learning to Learn” since after graduation from universities one does not have access to teachers for the remaining 80+ years of their life. The second important underlying skill that a student should have is the ability to apply knowledge to solve problems. In the past, emphasis has always been on demonstrating that you understand concepts and not in the ability to apply concepts using knowledge to solve problems.
Extensive soft skills training is offered to develop the students into all rounded personalities mastering the 21st century skills. A gamut of soft skills courses are offered to students helping them to excel in their communication skills, presentation skills and other life skills. The training offered is also designed in a learning by doing fashion with activity centric facilitation and assessment.
Consistent and meticulous up gradation of course material enabled structuring the course curricula with a healthy blend of theoretical aspects with experiential learning. The alumni are of the firm opinion that MSIT has cultivated in them a holistic personality, ready to excel anywhere in the world and stay ahead. Their experience is that a project oriented curriculum gives way to success! Competence coupled with confidence is the winning mantra in this cut-throat world of competition and MSIT grooms many a student’s life.
