Passage for Questions 3 and 4
The history of homosapiens dates back at least to the
Triassic time. Development was retarded, however, until
the sudden acceleration of evolutionary change that
occurred in the oldest Paleocene. This led in Eocene
time to an increase in average size, large mental capacity,
and special adaptations for different modes of life.
In the Oligocene Epoch, there was further improvement,
with the appearance of some new lines and extinction
of others.
The adaptation of homosapiens to almost all modes of
life parallels that of reptiles in Mesozoic time, and
except for greater intelligence, the homosapiens do
not seem to have done much better than corresponding
reptilian forms. The bat is doubtless a better flying
animal than the pterosaur, but the dolphin and the whale
are more fish like than the ichthyosaurs. Many swift-running
homosapiens of the plains, like the horse and the antelope,
must excel any of the dinosaurs. The tyranosaur was
a more powerful carnivore than any flesh-eating mammal,
but the lion or the tiger is probably a more efficient
and dangerous beast of prey because of its superior
brain. The significant point to observe is that different
branches of homosapien gradually fitted themselves with
all sorts of life, grazing on the plains and able to
run swiftly (horse, deer, bison), living in rivers and
swamps (hippopotamus, beaver), dwelling in trees (sloth,
monkey), digging underground (mole, rodent), feeding
on flesh in the forest (tiger) and on the plain (wolf),
swimming in the sea (dolphin, whale, seal) and flying
in the air (bat). Man is able by mechanical means to
conquer the physical world and to adapt himself to almost
any set of conditions.
Which of the following would be the most
appropriate title for the passage?
From Dinosaur to Man
Adaptation and Extinction
The Superiority of homosapiens
The Geologic Life Span
Man, Conqueror of the Physical World.
It can be inferred from the passage that the
pterosaur
Resemble the bat
Was a Mesozoic mammal
Was a flying reptile
Lived in the sea
Evolved during the Miocene period

ANALYTICAL & REASONING ABILITY

The electronic media is often accused of being
willing to do anything for ratings. However, recent
action by a television network indicates that the
electronic media is sometimes guided by moral principles.
This network has discovered, through polling voters,
on the east coast that the candidate given the MP
ticket had garnered enough votes to ensure victory
before the polls closed on the west coast. However,
the network withheld this information until the
polls on the west coast closed so that the information
would not affect the outcome of key electoral races.
Which one of the following most strengthens the
argument?
The network had endorsed the MP candidate
standing for the election.
The network expected its ratings to increase
if it predicted the winner of the elections,
and to decrease if did not predict the winner.
A rival network did predict a winner of the
elections before the polls on the west coast
closed.
The network believed that it would receive
higher ratings by not predicting the winner
of the elections.
The network feared that predicting the winner
of the elections could so anger political party
at the centre that it might enact legislation
preventing all future polling outside of voting
centers.
Staff members at the Delhi Detention Center (DDC)
typically oversee (inmates) students' schedules
and make all final decisions regarding the required
activities in which students participate. Students
are permitted, however, to make their own decisions
regarding how they spend their free time. Therefore,
students should be permitted to make their own decisions
regarding the elective courses that they wish to
take.
The conclusion above would be more reasonably drawn
if which of the following were inserted into the
argument as an additional premise?
Decisions regarding required activities are
more important than decisions regarding the
elective courses that students take.
Students are more willing to take elective
courses than to participate in required Center
activities.
Required activities contribute more to the
students' rehabilitation than do their free-time
activities.
Staff members at the DDC have found that
elective courses are more beneficial for students
than the available free-time activities.
When compared for decision-making purposes,
elective courses are more like free-time activities
than required activities.
